Background
Alexander Christoforou is a fine art photographer living in Toronto, primarily focused on architectural and human subjects. His work has been described as an emphasis on minimalism, surrealism, and existentialism, with photographic principles that challenge conventional perspectives, inviting viewers to question their perceptions of reality. Over the past six years, Alex has honed a distinctive visual language that captures the essence of both manmade structures and the individuals who inhabit them. His work, marked by its clarity and simplicity, challenges viewers to engage with their surroundings in ways that provoke introspection and reframe their understanding of the world.
Alex's artistic journey began at a young age—he started experimenting with photography at 15, initially gravitating toward abstract work. This early experimentation laid the foundation for his later exploration of architectural subjects. Over time, architecture became a central theme in his practice, offering a complex metaphor for the relationships between individuals and their environments. Architecture, in Alex's work, becomes a subject that both exists in its own right and holds itself up as a mirror to the human experience. His photography often isolates structures from their natural surroundings, offering viewers a glimpse into a world that might one day exist without nature. This absence challenges the viewer to reconsider the significance of manmade structures and the future implications of life devoid of the natural world.
Alex's academic background in Media Studies from the University of Guelph Humber, with a specialization in Image Arts and an emphasis on film and photography, has been instrumental in shaping his approach to the medium. His education provided him with a strong foundation in visual storytelling, enabling him to craft images that are as conceptually rich as they are visually striking.

Process
In 2017, Alex began to focus on mirrored images as a fundamental element in his work. This began with the experimentation of organic shapes with an emphasis on the abnormality present in existence. The use of mirrored objects slowly progressed to the implementation of manmade structures while using the same principles found in his abstract work. The mirrored architecture present in many of his works evokes a sense of longing with an unending criticism of banality in the search for perfection. Remaining to this day, mirrored images are ever present in both subtle and outright instances. Recent pieces have implemented his early abstract principles while also focusing on simplicity, transforming perspective and elevating the subjects presence.

Therein lies the heart of Alex’s artistic principles: simplicity, minimalism, and surrealism. His photography distills the subject to its essence, often separating it from its surroundings, creating compositions that encourage viewers to focus on the form and structure of the object at first glance. This simplicity is not about stripping away meaning, but about allowing the viewer to engage with the subject without distraction. In this minimalist space, beyond the first glance, Alex challenges the spectator to look past the surface, to delve deeper into the complexities of the subject matter. His work often employs surreal techniques, using isolation, warped elements, perspective alterations and mirrored aspects to present the familiar as strange while questioning the nature of reality. This disorientation encourages the viewer to engage with the subject as both an object and an idea, creating a dialogue about self-reflection, duality, and perception.

Although architecture became the primary subject and influence on his work, Alex draws inspiration from a variety of sources—cinema, classical music, and the natural world—all of which have discrete influence on the mood and atmosphere of his photographs. Alex often finds external media, especially his interests in surrealist cinema, provides the lens through which he views his subjects, whether those are urban structures or individuals within those spaces. Filmmakers such as Fellini, Buñuel, Lynch and Fassbinder have strongly influenced his visual language.

Existentialism is another key theme in Alex's photography; by focusing on the relationship between objects and their surroundings he creates a space for reflection on humanity's place in the world. By removing natural elements from the frame, Alex imagines a future where human-made structures exist in isolation. This approach prompts the viewer to consider what such a world would mean for the future of humanity and what role architecture plays in shaping our experience of reality. The tension between the absence of nature and the presence of manmade structures reflects broader themes of alienation, existence, and the complex interplay between individuals and the world they create.

One of Alex's greatest motivations as an artist is to question reality and expectations. By pushing the boundaries of minimalism, he invites viewers to reconsider their assumptions about normalcy and comfort. The stark, often disorienting imagery he creates in his photographs encourages an emotional response, compelling the viewer to look beyond the surface and explore the layers of meaning embedded in the work. Alex creates a provocative intrigue by offering an alternative way of viewing the world—one that is not defined by everyday perceptions of space, identity, and reality.
